What's in a name?!

One of my colleagues was recently blessed with a baby. This was her first day in office after the maternity leave. (ok fully paid 3 month maternity leave that is… we will debate this issue of maternity and paternity leave some other time. :p Let me not sound like a MCP-Male Chauvinistic Pig. :p) There was this usual atmosphere in the office, people gathering around her desk, looking at the newborn’s photographs and making comment after comment!

“Aww… cho chweet! She is looking just like you. Bilkul maa par gayi hai.”
“Arey nahin re… I think her nose is more like her father.”
“But see see her smile is just like her mom’s.”

Now for god’s sake can someone tell me, how can anybody on this earth, just by looking at a photograph of 3 month old baby find out that her nose looks like her father’s?! :O) In fact, I have never understood the funda of finding out how a baby of this size in anyway could ‘look’ similar to someone who is at least 10 or 20 times bigger in size! Duh! Well may be some people are good at it but I must admit that ‘d fail miserably even if I am given two photographs of the same person and asked to confirm if they are one and the same. I’d be skeptical. (Yeah yeah, no kidding! )

“What’s her name?”
“Sushma”
“Awww… such a nice name. So cuuuuuuuute.”

Now can some tell me what is so ‘cute’ about someone’s name being Sushma? (Apart from a politician sharing this name… which I don’t think is cool enough a reason to use so many ‘U’s in CUTE. Duh!)

Well well well… I must confess here that whether it may make sense to me or not, these gestures certainly strike a chord with the parents in question for sure! Guess it’s a human tendency to like to hear good thing about oneself, what say? (Ok ok, I don’t intend to show off my knowledge of human psychology ok. :D) These things may not make sense to some jerks (like me) but they mean so much to the parents… in any case, kahene me kya harz hai? :p

*Readers of this blog (if any) especially the new parents, kindly don’t plan to kill me. Last but not the least any attempt made at humor(if any) on this blog is perennially classified in the category of ‘pathetic attempts’, hence you are strongly advised not to waste you rotten tomatoes and eggs if you think these PJs suck. The doctor, looking at the baby, said, "Beautiful". The mom said, "Stop lying. U must be saying this to all parents". Doctor - "No. Not all. Only to those who actually are beautiful". - "What do you say to parents who dont have beautiful kids?". Doctor - "Ohhh... the baby is looking exactly like you... "

Anything you say to or for the baby has to be cute, no matter what. Its the norm. I guess thats the reason why even the oldest of names are remarked as cute for a newborn. And hey you can easily tell from the looks of a baby whom she has taken upon. All it needs you to do is visit more of your friends and relatives with newly borns

[invincible]
wonder if there is any room for speculation here! May be you are looking at it from a tainted glass and finding it colored? :p

[sherriff]
Looks like there are quite a few people who are bad at finding resemblance! Welcome to the team buddy! :D But yeah you bet, it can be emotional for sure, afterall who doesn't like to be complimented?!

[dc]
hehe... your cousin must be adept at finding resemblances unlike us, we the dumb souls!

[boldnbeautiful]
U bet! It is easier to find resemblance between a baby and a parent whom one has never seen eh? :p And btw babies are cute after 3 months? Uh?

[ephemeral]
May be you are right! May be because I have never ever tried to find any similarities but then I am quite sure I won't be able to find any even if I give it my best shot! :-|

[akruti]
ROFL @ laddu, jilebi, boondi :))
Arey nahin re aisa nahin ki I don't browse through blogs. Just that I am growing too lazy by day! High time I made a resolution to be regular, phew!

hey bhagvaan! how mean can you be! tsk tsk..haha anyways..what you say is sadly true..nothing cute about the name sushma and no one can find resemblance in a picture.. but us humans like to keep it lively and make conversation. About how cute, like you said..we like to hear good things....and take pride in our family members..well some ppl might not but generally we do :)and ig uess that only a new parent will understand
and here come a few rotten eggs your way..used the tomatoes up on the way here ....

hi fundoo, kem chho? tame aavo na aavo, hu toh tamaro blog jova aavi. and I liked yessir I did. U have a cool sense of humour. Quite like my own. Even I wonder how a 3 month old baby can resemble the parents. Sometime the elders actually go beyond the first generation and say, arre aanu naak toh, eni maa na mama jevu chhe? How does that work???? never understood.

When I have an opportunity look at babies, new borns, infants or toddlers I can often see how their facial features look similar to the either parents. I guess it is not so easy to do for everyone and you most definitely come in that category!

Also, I support the idea of a paternity leave. In fact the places where I currently work and have worked at give paternity leaves to new fathers. It is a great concept to help the newborn and father bond and also to let some load off the mother so both parents can equally participate in the care of the baby. Though the amount of paternity leave is usually less than that of maternity leave. It only makes sense because a woman who has carried out such physical and emotional strain/change for 9 months definitely needs a longer time getting back to normal. You agree?

LOL!!!! can just about imagine when the kid grows up and finally dawns on her that the names not pretty happening but then to site an example...my cousins daughter when she was 3 years old refused to acknowledge the names given by her parents and forced them to change it to the one preferred by her...hope sushmas parents decide to change the name now then at a later stage :P

the idea of paternity leaves is good after all its an addition in the family inclusive of hte father :)

[sinusoidally]
Aha! That was a very thoughtful comment! Well paternity leave, umm yeah why not! Guess those initial days are the ones that are toughest on the kid's mom and these are also the years which develop a bond between the newborn and his/her family! And besides, why only women be given the privilege of having 6 month paid leave? :p (ok u can chose to ignore the last comment... that was PPJ... Pathetic PJ :D)

[hirdu]
Thank you for stopping by sir... just updated my blog.

[interad]
Thanks for the information pal. I am sure lot of ppl here would find this information very useful.

[anz]
Now that is an impressive, pioneering concept... change kids' name as and when he wishes. :p Imagine ppl changing names after the cricket who scores the most number of runs or after the actor giving maximum number of box office hits. Aaj Shahrukh kal Hritik. :D (ok ok, now I am taking this way too far... this is what we call destructive imagination. :p)
